Britton Summer Reading Club

Kanawha County Public Library's summer library club for adults, the Britton Summer Reading Club, will run May 29 through Aug. 31. This summer's theme is "How I Spent My Summer Vacation."

Participants must check out and read six library books, choosing from nine categories. Details are explained in the registration materials.

As a result of a survey conducted last fall, we've made changes to the reading categories. Participants still must check out and read library books in six different categories, but this year they may choose from nine open-ended categories. Books can be fiction or nonfiction, and unabridged audiobooks also count. Here are the nine categories:

  • Any author whose last name begins with the letter B
  • Re-read a childhood favorite
  • An award winner
  • A book that has been made into a movie
  • A book by a West Virginia author or about West Virginia
  • A book whose author's last name is a color or whose title contains the name of a color
  • A book set in North America
  • A book set or written during the 1950s
  • One of Pearl's Picks from our web site

To complete the program, participants must:

  • register at a local branch of the Kanawha County Public Library system.
  • check out and read six books (unabridged audiobooks also count).
  • record their books on the provided book log.
  • turn their completed book log in by Aug. 31.

Participants will be invited to a reception at the Main Library on Sunday, September 16, at 2 p.m. The guest speaker will be David Fattaleh from the WV Division of Tourism. Those who complete the program will be presented with a special gift at the reception.

The club is named in memory of Clarence "Cab" Britton, a long-time patron of the Main Library, and is funded by a very generous bequest from Britton's estate. Kanawha County Public Library also offers summer reading clubs for teens and children. Ask for more information at your local library or visit www.kanawhalibrary.org
